The closure note LARMAC posted on its Wagsdale Dog Park page this October read: "Due to wet and muddy turf conditions, the dog park will be closed through Saturday, October 24. The park will reopen at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 25." LARMAC's amenity directory lists only one dog park for Ladera Ranch, on Cecil Pasture Road. When it closes, there is no second off-leash space to drive to.
That fact shapes how a Ladera Ranch dog gets its exercise. Wagsdale is the only place where the leash comes off. Every park, trail and shopping-center walkway that makes up the rest of the week has a leash rule, and LARMAC's latest plan for its dog-waste stations favors those leashed routes.
Wagsdale closes on a regular schedule
The Wagsdale Dog Park page lists daily hours of 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The park stays closed "on Tuesday until 3:00 p.m. for maintenance," and you need an access card to get in. Large and small dogs have separately gated areas. Amenities include dog fountains, a dog shower by the restrooms, perimeter walking paths and shade structures. In 2022, LARMAC added three 16' x 16' canopy-style shade structures and a decomposed-granite perimeter path, and resurfaced the parking lot.
Besides the weekly Tuesday window, the park closes for longer stretches. This spring, LARMAC closed it from Monday, April 13 to Friday, April 24 for tree-well enlarging, fertilizer, turf aeration, drainage work, mulch in the seating areas and compaction of the DG trail. Reopening was set for 3:00 p.m. on April 24, weather permitting. Back in 2023, the large side stayed open while the small side was re-sodded, overseeded and aerated. When work needs a full closure, though, the whole park shuts.
The LARMAC community guidelines set the rules for who can come in once the gate is open:
- Wagsdale is for LARMAC members and the guests they bring. Each member can bring up to five guests a day and must stay with them.
- Dogs older than four months must be vaccinated and legally licensed. Dogs under four months and unlicensed dogs can't use the park.
- A household can have no more than three dogs in the park at a time.
- Dogs stay leashed outside the gated area. No unattended or aggressive dogs, no food, and no females in heat, pregnant or lactating. Owners must pick up after their dogs.
Here's what that means in practice. A visiting relative's young puppy can't come in. A household with four dogs has to split the visit. Anyone who works a Tuesday-morning schedule loses the park every week.
Check the right page before you drive over
Wagsdale closures show up as "Closure Notes" on the LARMAC dog park amenity page. That's where the October wet-turf notice appeared. LARMAC's Field Status & Conditions page is easy to mix up with it. That page covers sports fields after bad weather, and on October 23, 2026 it listed "Wagsdale (Sports Field)" as closed for inclement weather. The sports field and the dog park share a name but have separate status notices. Check the amenity page for the dog park.
Everywhere else, dogs stay on leash
Outside Wagsdale's gates, the leash rule is the same nearly everywhere. LARMAC's general pet rule requires dogs to be leashed on Covered Property, except inside the owner's home, and owners must clean up after them. These rules come from the HOA's own documents, so treat this as general information, not legal advice, and check LARMAC's current guidelines if anything about your situation is unclear.
The real alternatives to the dog park are the leashed walking routes, and some of them reach well past the neighborhood:
| Place | Dogs allowed? | Hours or limits |
|---|---|---|
| Wagsdale Dog Park, Cecil Pasture Road | Off leash inside the gated large- and small-dog areas | 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; closed Tuesdays until 3:00 p.m.; access card required |
| LARMAC parks | Leashed | Close at sunset; for members and guests, except Cox Sports Park |
| LARMAC trails | Leashed; stay on marked trails | Sunrise to sunset; for members and guests |
| County Regional Trail, the West Ridge Trail | "Dogs permitted (on leash only)" | Sunrise to sunset |
| O'Neill Regional Park: paved roads, plus the Mesa, Arroyo Mesa and Twisted Tire trails and the Pawfoot trail within the campground | Leashed, six feet maximum | Per OC Parks rules |
| O'Neill wilderness trails: Arroyo Trabuco Wilderness, Vedanta Wilderness, Tijeras Creek, Eagle Grove | No dogs | Not applicable |
The West Ridge Trail page is the only LARMAC trail listing in the table that spells out dog access. LARMAC's trail rules also note that wildlife lives in the open space, which is one more reason to keep a leash on and stay on marked trails.
O'Neill Regional Park is the one where it pays to plan your route. The OC Parks rules for O'Neill allow dogs on the paved roads and four named trails: Mesa, Arroyo Mesa, Twisted Tire, and Pawfoot within the campground. The park's wilderness trails, including Arroyo Trabuco and Tijeras Creek, are closed to dogs. If you start a walk with your dog at O'Neill, stick to the paved roads and those four trails.
LARMAC's waste-station plan favors parks and trails
The community's dog-waste stations show where LARMAC expects dog walks to happen. In November 2025, LARMAC reviewed all 83 stations in Ladera Ranch. It planned to remove 20 stations in low-use areas and move eight to busier spots, which leaves 63. The announcement described the removed stations this way:
"20 stations situated in low-use areas (not near clubhouses, parks, or trails) will be removed to help reduce expenses."
LARMAC estimated the change would save $12,240 a year on dog-waste bags. It also pointed out that 583 trash cans are spread through the community. The bags are a courtesy, and LARMAC asks residents to carry their own because the stations aren't meant to be anyone's only supply. The plan kept stations near clubhouses, parks and trails, removed ones in low-use areas, and moved others to higher-traffic locations. LARMAC expected the work to take three to four weeks and said it would post an updated station map afterward. Under that plan, a walk through quieter residential pockets will pass fewer stations than a walk along a trail, so keep your own bags with you.
Running errands with a dog
The leashed routine reaches the shopping centers too. Shop & Dine Ladera Ranch says leashed dogs are welcome in the outdoor common areas at Bridgepark Plaza, Mercantile East, Mercantile West and the Terrace Shops. Individual restaurants and retailers may set their own policies. That covers the walkways, but each business decides for itself whether dogs can come inside.
The dog-care businesses are spread across those same centers.
Mercantile West. Posh Paws Pet Spa is a new dog and cat groomer at 25642 Crown Valley Parkway, Suite E2. Its website lists Monday through Saturday hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with Sunday appointments by phone. The Ladera Ranch Chamber of Commerce lists an opening party for Saturday, October 31, 2026, from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. Its neighbors are Oslo Coffee Company in Suite E1 and Oniguru Contemporary Japanese in Suite E3. The center sits at Crown Valley and Antonio Parkways, and Stater Bros. is one of its tenants.
Terrace Shops. Two pet businesses share the building at 1101 Corporate Drive. Ladera Ranch Grooming & Pet Spa in Suite A-4 offers dog and cat grooming, nail trims, baths and self-wash. Ladera Ranch Animal Hospital in Suite A-7 lists hours of 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekends. Weekend hours at the vet mean a Saturday visit can fit into the same trip as a groom or a self-wash.
Antonio Parkway. Pet Supply's location page lists its Ladera Ranch store at 25762 Antonio Parkway, open 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily, phone (949) 841-3951. Shop & Dine also has a "Coming Soon!" listing for Pet Supply at 27542 Antonio Parkway, Building D. That's the Mercantile East address shared with Trader Joe's, which is in Building C. Neither listing says whether that means a move or a second store, so call the number above before making a special trip.
Put together, there's a weekday dog routine that doesn't depend on Wagsdale at all. Take a leashed walk on the West Ridge Trail between sunrise and sunset, run errands through one of the four centers that welcome leashed dogs in their common areas, and stop at a groomer or the vet at the Terrace Shops. When the Wagsdale page shows a closure note after a storm, the rest of that routine is still available.
